Hulu Redesigns Viewing Screen

March 16, 2012 | Ibex Marketing

Yesterday, Hulu announced that it has upgraded its viewing screen. The biggest news is that the viewing window is now 55% larger, and it's displayed with a drop shadow against a nice, neutral gray background. (Apparently that is called a "video matte" in the trade; who knew?) Video details appear below the viewing window, and the interface is been tidied up in general. I think it's great that Hulu cares...

Don’t Look Now; Here Comes Amazon

March 15, 2012 | Ibex Marketing

Netflix. YouTube. Hulu. Anyone who streams video content from the Internet probably is aware of these big three sources of television shows and movies. But a lot of people don't think of Amazon quite as quickly. The company has steadily been beefing up its streaming capabilities and building its content library. And yesterday, Amazon made a big announcement. The company has announced a deal with Discovery to add many of...

Samsung’s New TVs Point to the Future

March 14, 2012 | Ibex Marketing

Last week, Samsung announced that its 2012 HDTVs will start shipping this month. While their "fifth generation" Smart TVs have more processing power than ever, what caught my eye were four interface features. If you've followed my writing elsewhere (including this GigaOM Pro report), you may have noticed that I'm very interested in how we will merge the worlds of traditional linear programming, video-on-demand offerings by subscription television services, and...

What is Apple up to with Its TV Plans?

March 13, 2012 | Ibex Marketing

Who is Henry Blodget? According to the "Business Insider" website, he is "co-founder, CEO and Editor-In Chief of Business Insider, a former top-ranked Wall Street analyst, [and] the host of Yahoo Daily  Ticker, a Yahoo Finance video show viewed by several million people a  month.  He is often a guest on CNN, MSNBC, NPR, and other networks." Clearly, here is someone who spends much of his time learning and thinking...

March Madness Online: No More Free Ride!

March 12, 2012 | Ibex Marketing

The NCAA Division 1 men's basketball tournement launches on Wednesday, and like last year, you can watch all 67 games online. But you can't watch them for free this time. The March Madness streaming video has grown to be an enormous success over the past few years, and this year you're asking to pay for it. What's the price of a ticket to the Big Show? $3.99. Seriously folks, that's...

Oh Boy! A New iPad!

March 9, 2012 | Ibex Marketing

You may have noticed that there has not been a lot of coverage of the new iPad 3 here over the preceding six months. While many members of the new era media were working themselves into a speculative frenzy over what the unannounced and unspecified product would be, I was content to wait for the facts. And I have to admit that at least from the display perspective, the new...

YouTube: Free Movies

March 8, 2012 | Ibex Marketing

If you're not aware of this yet, you might want to know that YouTube is much more than cute kittens and pop music videos. The service has been renting full length movies for a long time. But did you know that you can watch some full-length movies on YouTube for free? Okay, I'll be the first to admit that you won't find many (any?) Academy Award winners on this list,...

Smack-Down for Aereo?

March 7, 2012 | Ibex Marketing

I recently wrote about the new Aereo service scheduled to launch in New York City this month. Other systems that have tried to provide broadcast content over the Internet have been smacked down in the courts, but Aereo and its backers believe that it has a model that will hold up to challenges. And it looks as though we're going to get the chance to find out if they are...

Barely Video

March 6, 2012 | Ibex Marketing

Okay, I don't know exactly how I can justify this as an HDTV Almanac entry, except that it's just too cool and it is a demonstration of how online business video can be so much more than just a TV commercial. This piece is from Mercedes about it's "invisible" demonstration car that promotes its hydrogen fuel cell technology. I like it because it's a clever use of display technology, and...

YouTube: An Hour per Second

March 5, 2012 | Ibex Marketing

Last month, YouTube updated its stats again. The site now is getting new video content uploaded at the rate of one hour of video every second of every day. That's 60 hours of content every minute. I find that astounding. You might think that all this content is just falling into a black hole in the cloud somewhere. (Actually, I suspect that quite a lot of it is, and it...
