Free Internet TV Network: Revision3

April 11, 2008 | Ibex Marketing

Look at it this way; the Internet can be the world’s biggest TiVo, full of on-demand video programming waiting for you to watch what you want, when you want. And much of it is free. Now, a lot of the content is short length, low resolution, over-compressed, slow frame rate clips like we’re used to from sources like YouTube. These are the potato chips of online video programming: occasionally tasty, but not very filling.

There are a number of alternatives, however, that offer higher quality content with higher quality images. I’ve written about one of my favorites, Joost, more than once here. But I recently came across another Internet network worth noting: Revision3.

Let me say right off the bat that I am not in the fat part of the target demographic for this network. Let’s face it; I don’t know what half the show titles even mean. But there are two shows that I watch and like: Tekzilla and Systm. The shows are hosted by Patrick Norton, who is my favorite tech TV host. I’ve known him since the early days when he was an editorial assistant at some of the Ziff Davis magazines that I wrote for back then. He soon landed on “Screen Savers” as Leo Laporte’s co-host, and I appeared on that show a few times. But I digress….

The point about Revision3 is that they make it easy to watch the shows. You have your choice of small or large Windows Media Player WMV, or XVID, or Quicktime. And if you have a fast broadband connection and some patience and plenty of hard drive space, you can even download high-resolution Quicktime versions of the shows.

Revision3 relies on traditional “on-air” sponsors to fund the programming, and the shows I’ve watched rely on the hosts to make the commercial announcements; they’re pretty short and I don’t find them to be too intrusive. And one of the best parts is that you don’t have to sign up or register, and you don’t have to download any software. Check it out!
